The Kansas City School of Law was incorporated in May of 1895 and first opened its doors to students on September 7, 1895. Originally, it was housed in the basement of the New York Life building, located downtown at Baltimore and 8th street. After thirty-two years and two moves, the Law School moved to its new location at 913 Baltimore Avenue in 1926. The new building was designed by Wilkinson & Crans and was planned to have two classrooms to house up to 550 students. The original law school building is still standing, now part of the historic Library District. On May 19, 1938, the Kansas City School of Law merged with the University of Kansas City. The merger was said to meet the needs of both institutions; the University gained the Law School’s valuable library of over 10,000 books, and the School of Law gained the distinction of being part of a University instead of operating in isolation. It is at this time that the Pandex transitions to the Kangaroo. In 1963, the law school moved with Kansas City University as it was merged with the University of Missouri; the two becoming known as the University of Missouri at Kansas City. The School of Law made its final move in 1974 to UMKC’s main campus, into the building that it occupies today.
The Leon E. Bloch Law Library is pleased to present its collection of historic yearbooks from the Law School’s history here. For the consistency of this collection, both the Pandex and the Kangaroo Yearbooks have been given consecutive volume numbers. The Kangaroo does not originally have volume delineations.
